The story behind our creation. Leaving security, to follow a conviction.
When studying at Purdue, I couldn't help but take in the beautiful landscape work throughout the campus. These Alocasia odora were placed outside of one of our favorite dining halls.
A Past That Shaped Who I am Today
I hear fresh paint smacking on the walls. The smell of the fresh paint tickles the inside of my nose. Groggy as can be, I wake up from my long nap on the floor. After all, we just moved and my parents and older siblings were hard at work to prepare our new home before moving in all the furniture.
Believe it or not, this is one of my favorite memories as a child. I specifically remember my mom painting just about every corner of the house and my dad cleaning and preparing all the spaces before we brought in the furniture. We moved nearly every couple of years when I was a child. Even though we moved often, the reality is, where we lived was a house, but how we lived made it a home.
“where we lived was a house, but how we lived made it a home”
My family owned a custom home construction business, and this completely shaped my desire to be an Interior Designer. I truly never wanted to become anything else! My favorite smells to this day are newly framed walls, freshly installed hardwood, and drying paint. Yes, all the VOC’s! It seemed to me that all the elements inside a house, aided in making it a home.
I graduated from Purdue University with, you guessed it, a degree in Interior Design. Soon after graduation, I was offered a position as an Architectural designer at a firm in Indianapolis. It was my DREAM job! Picture your favorite HGTV designer. She walks into the clients home, see’s the space, and creates her design moving whatever walls or creating any addition necessary in order to make the vision come to life. Yeah, that was my life. Why would I leave something like that?
One of my first projects as an Architectural Designer was to gut and renovate 2 full bathrooms and 1 half bathroom for a dear client. This sleek bathroom is the final product of the half bath where we took her out of her comfort zone. The client was a dream and our team was too!
There was a deeper desire in my heart that was not being fulfilled. I was pursuing what I wanted. You will quickly learn that my Faith is everything to me. Sometimes what may seem like an irrational decision and doesn’t make all that much sense to the limited mind, is exactly where the Lord is calling.
The Lord blessed my journey as an Architectural Designer. I did very well for our family just coming out of college and had limitless earning potential. The Lord shone his grace upon providing the ultimate position I thought I always wanted, very early in my career. I believe He provided this opportunity so that I wouldn’t spend my life chasing something I thought I wanted. I write all of this with incredible thankfulness and realize how fortunate I am for that opportunity.
Psalm 37:4 says, “ Delight yourself in the Lord and he will grant you the desires of your heart.” My desire has not changed. What has changed is the way I implement these desires. Whether it's making a house a home for others, or creating a practical way to help others build their relationships with my line of greeting cards. My God-given desire is to love others and use my talents to serve. May this be a landmark to continue to dedicate myself to the Lords calling and serve YOU well!
